Chapter Twelve
London, England
Angelus found Spike in Drusillaâs room the next evening and shoved him unceremoniously out of the bed. Drusilla, putting her hair up at the vanity, shot Angelus a reproving look.
âHeâs mine to play with, you know,â she said frostily, and Angelus snorted.
âI am right here,â Spike said from the floor, where he was trying to extricate himself from the bedcovers.
âI see youâre feeling better, Dru,â Angelus said, ignoring Spikeâs protest.
âOh, yes,â she said, her eyes shining. âMy Spike brought me a lovely present, all that pain and fear. It was quite tasty.â
Angelus made a sound that might have indicated understanding or slight disapproval. âWell,â he said, âIâm glad to see youâre up to going out again. I believe Spike needs some new clothes.â
Drusilla gave a small hop in her chair. âOoooh, shopping!â she said, clapping her hands.
âShopping?â Spike, finally out from under the bedclothes and getting dressed, stopped with his pants half-buttoned. âAll the shops will be closed.â
âOh, I know a few places,â Angelus said, his eyes twinkling. âDonât worry. Weâll have you into something fashionable in no time.â
âSomething fashionable!â Spike looked down at his tweed suit, which, he had to admit, was rather showing the need for a good brush-up. âWhatâs wrong with this suit?â
âWell, itâs hardly going to do to wear to a ball or to the theater, now is it?â Angelus said. He flashed Spike a saucy grin.
âBall?â Spike shook his head. âI think not. They barely tolerated me at balls when I was alive. Donât really feature getting into one now Iâm dead.â
âBut Spike,â Angelus said, his grin getting wider. âI believe you have some unfinished business with society.â
âYes,â Dru said, putting the last pin into her hair and patting the curls into place. âThat nasty girl with the big eyes, youâre not done with her.â She came to where Spike was trying to tie his cravat and took the cloth out of his hands, and in a matter of seconds the thing was knotted properly.
âWhat, you mean Cecily?â Spikeâs eyes narrowed at the thought, and he smiled.
âYes,â Dru said. âHorrid girl. She hurt my knight, and she must be punished.â She gave the cravat a last tug. âThere. My Angel is right, though. You do need new clothes. These are beginning to smell.â She picked up her hat and began to pin it on.
âThey were beginning to smell when you buried him, dear.â Darla, standing in the door, wrinkled her nose and managed to look down it at Spike, though he was taller than she by several inches. âAre we going shopping?â She looked up at Angelus.
He rolled his eyes. âYes, we are,â he said with a resigned sigh. He offered her his arm. âI was only planning to go to the tailorâs, but I suppose we can stop by Madame Verdiâs afterward.â
Darla took his arm and gave him a radiant smile. âDarling, you do know how to pamper a girl,â she said, and led him out of the room.
Drusilla took Spikeâs arm and snuggled close to his side.
